Joan Armatrading의 Love and Affection(1976년)를 접하고 오랜 후 Michael Kiwanuka의 Love & Hate(2016년)를 처음 들었을 때도 떠오르던 똑 같은 질문 – ‘이 노래의 정체는 뭐지?’ 어렵게 찾아낸 그 답은 바로 Soul Folk 혹은 Black Folk였습니다.
흑인들이 주체가 되어 부르는 Folk인데 그들 특유의 Soul뿐만 아니라 Jazz, Blues, Roots, Country, Gospel 등이 혼재된 매력적인 음악입니다.
그 중에는 백인들이 만들어 놓은 Folk의 Format을 따르는 뮤지션, 자신들의 전통 민요를 앞세우는 뮤지션, 새로운 시대에 맞추어 다채로운 해석을 꾀하는 뮤지션 등 다양한 시도가 있습니다.
오늘은 기존 Folk 음악의 외연外延을 대폭 확장한 Soul Folk의 실체를 대면對面합니다.
